Technically ozone (O₃) is activated oxygen, another molecular form of oxygen (O₂) that can be used as a strong oxidizer. In fact, ozone is reported to be 1 1/2 times stronger and up to 3,000 times faster than chlorine.

Ozone is a chemical-free water treatment method that uses the same electrical process that lightning uses to purify air during a storm.

In the quantities needed for water purification, it is not irritating to humans or equipment. It purifies water and air quickly and efficiently. Its primary by product is life giving oxygen. Ozone for drinking water purification has been used in Europe since the late 1800's. In the United States, over 70 municipal water treatment plants already use ozone, including the 580 million gallon per day Los Angeles facility. The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) requires ozonation before bottling.
